Historic Preservation

Constructed during winter of 1886-87 by Wheeler & Parks, Boston, MA. It was the oldest plant in Florida operating over 100 years until 1996, providing over 1,000,000 gal a day for domestic, manufacturing and extinguishment of fires. Fifty nine hydrants were connected to the fire system. Significant for fire protection since the Great Fire of 1884 destroyed the major business section of town. Site is being used currently for Environmental Education Center including agricultural and Natural History Museum. Water Works was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Design Aspects

·Preserve & Restore exterior wood doors, windows, & trim.
·Demolish and remove termite riddled and deteriorated structure.
·Renovate interiors using classical detailing reminiscent of Architecture in the early 1900’s.
·Make building accessible from exterior by physically disabled persons.
·Site Restoration and addition of amphitheater.
